10 Reasons to Celebrate Halloween in Prague
1. The city is made for spooky stories
Gothic towers, narrow cobbled lanes and centuries of legends: the Golem, the Iron Man of Old Town and countless restless spirits. Prague looks like a Halloween set all year round.
2. Ghost tours of the Old Town
After dark, guided ghost tours take you through the alleys of the Old Town and tell the city’s darkest legends. A perfect warm-up before a Halloween party.
3. Historic cemeteries
Olšany Cemetery is the largest in Prague. Vyšehrad Cemetery is the resting place of Dvořák, Smetana and Mucha, and Franz Kafka is buried at the New Jewish Cemetery.
4. Dušičky: candlelit nights of the dead
On November 1 and 2, Czechs honour their dead during Dušičky (All Souls’ Day). Cemeteries glow with thousands of candles, which makes for an unforgettable, quiet atmosphere just after Halloween.
5. A bone church an hour away
The Sedlec Ossuary in Kutná Hora, about an hour from Prague by train, is decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people. It’s one of the eeriest places in Europe.
6. Halloween parties everywhere
Bars, clubs and student dorms all over Prague throw costume parties around October 31. Read more in our Halloween in Prague guide.
7. Dress up
A party without a costume isn’t a party. Go classic as a vampire, witch or zombie, or browse our women’s, men’s and kids’ Halloween costumes.
8. Autumn colours
Petřín Hill, Letná Park, Stromovka and Vyšehrad turn gold and red in October, ideal for a walk before night falls.
9. Warm up the Czech way
After a cold evening outside, nothing beats goulash with dumplings, a glass of Czech beer or a hot mulled wine (svařák).
10. Celebrate witches twice a year
Liked Halloween? Come back on April 30 for Pálení čarodějnic, the Czech Witches’ Night with bonfires and witch costumes. Get your witch costume ready.
